General Inpatient Hospice Care:

General Inpatient Care (GIP) for hospice patients is a level of care for those in need of symptom management and comprehensive education and support related to the terminal diagnosis. General Inpatient Care is available in the hospital, Denver Inpatient Care Center at Lowry, or skilled nursing facility. The length of stay is determined by the Denver Hospice Inpatient Care Center nurses and our physician. Most insurance policies cover room and board at this level of care.

  • GIP hospice care is for short-term, aggressive, symptom management related to the terminal diagnosis that is out of control, such as unmanageable pain, nausea, vomiting, or other conditions.
  • Once the patient's symptoms and pain are stabilized, he or she must return to a routine level of hospice care.

Routine Level of Hospice Care:

Routine Level of Hospice Care is provided in the comfort and security of your home, wherever you are - home, assisted living facility, or skilled nursing facility. A hospice nurse will work with a patient's primary physician to bring the appropriate hospice services to your home. Members of a hospice team, including a physician, nurse, certified nursing assistant, social worker and chaplain, will work with families and caregivers to help them feel comfortable performing routine care activities.

If a patient or family decides to remain at The Denver Hospice Inpatient Care Center at Lowry, patient will be placed on "routine level of care" and private pay rates will apply. Our staff will work with you to make arrangements for a deposit and payment to cover room and board charges.
